Juapong is a town in the Volta Region of Ghana of about 5,000 people with only two primary schools. The most densely populated area of the town is called “low cost” and this is where this Primary and Junior High School is located. In 2013 the school had a population of over 600 pupils with over 100 students in each class. The existing structure was under serious pressure making it difficult for learning and teaching, and posing a health and safety risk. This community had therefore asked the Foundation for two secure classrooms to reduce the pressure on classes 5 and 6 where students are prepared for Junior High School.
The project was implemented in 2014 and involved the construction of a two classroom block headmistress’s office and store. This has provided the school with increased capacity to reduce class sizes and increase contact time.
